Tuckpointing in Springfield IL - mortar joints that keep the weather out

Crumbling or sandy mortar between your bricks lets water in. We grind it out, repack the joints and leave a wall that sheds rain.

What does tuckpointing fix, and what will it take on your house?

Tuckpointing, also called repointing, means raking the worn mortar out of your brick joints and packing new mortar in, so water stays out of the wall. Artisan Springfield Concrete and Masonry does it on homes in Springfield, IL and the cities around it.

Usually you notice it as sand on the windowsill, joints sitting back from the face of the brick, or a damp spot inside after a hard rain. The price moves with how much of the wall needs work, how high we have to go and whether a drainage fix or loose brick has to come first, and the schedule turns on the weather and on that first repair. If the whole face of the house is tired, masonry restoration may be the better fit. The estimate puts a number on your own walls.

How we do tuckpointing on your walls

People use the word tuckpointing for more than one job, from patching a few bad joints to redoing a whole wall to the old style with a thin raised line, so the first thing I do is pin down which one your house needs. Then we find out why the mortar failed and deal with that, rake the old mortar out to solid material without chewing up the brick edges, and mix a mortar that suits your brick and the weather that wall takes. We pack the joints in layers so they fill solid, tool them to match the joints around them and clean the brick face before we leave. The goal is a wall where you have to look twice to see what we redid.

Bricks that have cracked through or whose faces are flaking off get swapped out while the joints are open, and that's brick repair, which usually shows up on the same estimate. If you've been meaning to redo the drive, we lay driveway pavers too, so one crew can handle both.

Tuckpointing and brick work in Springfield: permits and weather

The permit question has to be answered before we touch a joint, and Springfield's own list doesn't answer it for you. The city's Building & Zoning Department issues permits, and its list names building, roof, fence and similar work but not tuckpointing, so that list doesn't settle whether your wall needs one. We check with the city or village office for your address before we start, and if your job needs a permit, we take care of the paperwork.

Weather sets our calendar more than anything else here. In central Illinois the first freeze usually comes around the middle of October and the first hard freeze in late October or the first few days of November, and fresh mortar needs to set before nights get that cold, so fall jobs need to get on the schedule early. Summer has its own catch, because lime mortar that dries too fast cures less fully and holds poorly, and the preservation guidance is that a lime job goes best when new joints dry at a steady pace. We plan around the same weather on jobs in Chatham and Decatur.

How a tuckpointing job runs

  1. Call or send the form

Call (217) 210-0722 or send the form and tell us which walls are bothering you. We'll set a time for me to come out.

  2. I look the walls over

I come out myself, check how far the mortar has gone and where water is getting in, and tell you what I see. The written estimate says in plain words what we'll do to your joints, what the finished wall will look like and what it costs, so the price isn't a guess.

  3. We check rules and set dates

Once you say go, we check what your city or village asks for and pick dates that give fresh mortar time to set. In fall that means getting ahead of the freezes.

  4. We repoint and walk it

Our crew rakes out and repacks the joints and cleans the brick face. Before we pack up, we walk the finished wall with you.

Questions before you book tuckpointing

Is tuckpointing the same as repointing?

Yes. For most homes it's the same job, taking out worn mortar and putting new mortar in its place. Preservation guides call it repointing and treat tuckpointing as a somewhat loose name for it, which is why you'll hear both.

What is the best mortar for tuckpointing a historic brick house?

For historic brick, lime mortar is usually the better choice, because it's soft, porous and stays stable as temperatures change. Straight portland cement and sand mortar is extremely hard and shrinks as it sets, which makes it a poor match for old brick, but the right mix still depends on your wall's condition and how much weather it takes, so ask any mason which mortar they plan to use and why. If your house is in one of Springfield's historic areas, the city's design guidelines also rule out sandblasting and other treatments that damage historic materials and call for the gentlest cleaning that works.

Why do I need to fix a leaking downspout before tuckpointing?

Because the water that washed out the old mortar will wash out the new mortar too. When a leaking downspout caused the damage, it has to be replaced and any other drainage problems fixed before the joints get redone, so your plan may start with that step. If I spot it on the estimate visit, it goes on the estimate.

When do spring freezes usually end in central Illinois?

Much of central Illinois sees its last freeze around mid April, and freezing nights typically keep showing up well into the month. That's an average, so plan on cold nights through early April at least and expect spring repointing to start once they're behind us.

How much does tuckpointing cost in Springfield, IL?

Your cost comes from the written estimate, because the same word covers a few patched joints and a whole side of a house. Working high up, mortar that has failed deep into the joints, a matched lime mix and any drainage or brick work that has to come first all push it up, and a small patch keeps it down. If a smaller job will do, I'll tell you.

What causes white haze on brick after tuckpointing?

That's usually efflorescence, a white bloom that sometimes shows up in the first few months after repointing. It usually goes away with normal weathering, so give it a season before you worry about it.

Why Springfield homeowners call Artisan Springfield Concrete and Masonry for tuckpointing

  • I write every estimate myself

I come out to look at every job and write the estimate myself, and I'm on our jobs working right alongside the crew. The person who told you what your wall needs is there when it gets done.

  • Older brick homes since 2013

We started in 2013, and in 13 years repointing and brick repair on older homes has become what we're best known for. Springfield has plenty of older brick houses, and that's where that experience pays off on your wall.

  • Licensed and insured, ask about dust

We're licensed and insured. Raking out joints throws fine silica dust, and OSHA's construction standard requires employers to limit how much of it workers breathe, so it's fair to ask how our crew handles it before you hire anyone.

  • Honest answers, even small ones

I'd rather lose a sale than sell work your house doesn't need, so if a few joints will do or the wall can wait a few years, I'll say so. Satisfaction guaranteed on every job.

Get the cause and the mortar right, and the joints hold. Tell us about your walls or call (217) 210-0722.

  • Brick repair

When a brick has cracked through or its face is flaking off, we cut it out and set a matching one so the patch blends in.

  • Driveway pavers

If your driveway is cracked or heaving, a paver drive gives you a surface that's easy to fix one piece at a time and looks good beside brick.
